Opus Hong Kong (2011)
London agency Winkreative sent me to Hong Kong several times in 2010-11, to create this short commercial documentary for their client, Swire Properties. I’m still proud of this film, shot entirely with my own two hands on crushingly little sleep.
I spent the next few years making several films for Swire in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou as well as all over Hong Kong. Many overnight flights, long discussions in epic meeting rooms and (this being before drones were a thing) several helicopters.
Monocle Magazine (2008-2011)
Between the ages of 25-28 I made 14 films for Monocle. Each time, I’d get flown somewhere with my camera kit to cover something culturally interesting alongside a writer and a photographer. Over three years I got to shoot in Taiwan, Korea, Switzerland, Italy, Finland, Sweden and the USA. Here’s three highlights -
Deep in the art world with Monocle’s iconic culture editor, Rob Bound. What a week.
A week in Portland, Oregon with twin brothers running an artisanal printing company. The fourth shot in the film, a weird aerial dolly shot, is actually me dangling my only camera at arm’s length over that antique machine, as I crept along a row of chairs. What a joker.
Back in the fast-moving entourage of Monocle’s culture editor, this time in Cannes at the global TV industry’s annual gabfest.
Better Than Therapy (2007)
My dad’s pop band from decades ago reforms for a world tour. My wife and I tag along and shoot this movie.
And actually before that, during rehearsals for the tour, I shot a video that featured briefly on the homepage of Rolling Stone Magazine 🤩
Behind The Shimmy (2003)
My first feature doc, aged 20 touring the US with the Bellydance Superstars. Sold to The Documentary Channel and on merch tables at bellydance shows for the next 20 years.
FEATURE DOCUMENTARY PITCH FILMS
This is as close as I’ll come to longform nowadays. Life is much sweeter when I’m helping other people pitch their movies, rather than getting impaled on my own.
Redwoods (2023)
Director: Jack Barraclough
Uphill (2022)
Director: Zara Hayes
I also pitch drama!
