AT A GLANCE

I work with people to make sure their videos are incredible, and credible, whatever that means in each context.

Four recent demonstrations of this - directed and edited by me, working with a team of 5-10 comrades in each case:

Swedish House Mafia

Having recently headlined Coachella, SHM wanted to launch their new record with a 4-hour livestream returning to their underground club roots.

Here’s my TREATMENT for the artist team.

Jacob Collier

My favourite of several artist promos for Universal Music Group. All the footage is downloaded from social platforms, with several forms of animation mixed in, and one of my cleverest music edits.

West Ham United

Three seasons of pre-match video experiences for WHU, using every screen in their stadium to excite 60,000 people right before kick off.

YouTube

Honoured to design a video series for one of the greatest brands ever - YouTube. The brief was to make something “fresh and authentically gen-Z” in several languages I don’t speak.

Here’s my TREATMENT for the brand team.

SELF IMAGE

Over 41 years I’ve managed to develop two skills to a striking level of Advanced Mastery:

1. Video Editing

Present company excepted, short-form Video Editing is easily my favourite use of time.

2. Creative Collaboration

ie. helping the world’s most complicated humans to have a good time delivering their best work.

Additionally -

I have several Expert Skills to a high professional standard:

Filmmaking || Spent much of my 20s-30s shlepping about with cameras and tripods and lights and lenses, for business and pleasure.

Music and Musicians || Playing in bands forever, naturally I’ve directed perhaps two million music videos, plus concert films, live visuals and artist/album promo of every kind. I’ve made two longform documentaries about the entertainment business, and most of my family and friends are professional artists of one kind or another.

Design & Motion || Working with such a range of tasty designers over many years, it’s possible to absorb enough to mitigate a lack of natural design talent.

Video Post || Very familiar with all technical, creative and political aspects of commercial post pipelines.

The Future || Having spent more time with this subject than anyone I know personally, I have many pet theories which I’m keener to discuss at length than you are.

To a less-than-professional standard I’m also capable of parenting, philosophy, playing any musical instrument except a flute, juggling, conversational Spanish and a bit of Italian.

🐙 2018 - 2024 | Edit Director

From 2018 I started building my team. The contents of the PORTFOLIO above mainly reflect this time. And there’s more on my company website, embedded here:

‣
🏃🏻‍♂️ 2013 - 2018 | Editor & Director

Freelance editing for regular longstanding clients, and a lot of creative work.

If for some reason you’re curious about this era, my 2018 website is here.

Here’s my proudest achievement from that time.

And here’s my reel aged 30. This thumbnail is Joe Sumner of Fiction Plane, about to leap off his bass amp at Stade de France. Such a moment, I think it’s appeared in every showreel since I shot it in 2007.

🧒🏻 2003 - 2013 | Filmmaker

The kid from the agency. Plus two feature docs. More details on my old website.

‣
👶🏼 1983 - 2003 | Fool

My first job was in 2003 as touring videographer for my uncle’s bellydance troupe, true story.

Prior to that, my most noteworthy achievement was this curious little fairy tale in 2001:

My first ever video was in the mid-80s, when I tried to make a cinema by drawing with felt tip onto a sheet of cling film stretched across a cardboard box, shining a torch through the drawings onto a wall. Which didn’t work at all.

‣
📄  Career Overview

Originally I was going to be a movie director. I went straight from A-levels to film school, then directly on to my first movie: fly on the wall with my uncle’s bellydance troupe, a 20 year-old philosopher probing the meaning of entertainment.

Early in the eternity spent editing that first feature, I joined the roster of Blueberry Creatives, who proceeded to keep my freshly minted Final Cut Pro expertise very busy for the next decade. Many tasters and trailers for the BBC, two years at CNN, edits for Nike and Coca Cola and Samsung… I trained editors at Google’s new London HQ, and travelled the world making art films for Monocle Magazine. I made another feature doc, this time embedded with aging rock heroes The Police as they reformed for a world tour.

Through the 2010s there was less scuttling around Soho, now working with clients more directly from my studio above a music venue in East London. Gradually I formed a team, and found myself running a successful video company called Tentacle. We worked with ad agencies, record labels and SaaS brands, then in 2020 pivoted towards live streaming and video engineering.

From ‘20-‘23 Tentacle orchestrated many high-stakes remote pitch presentations, innovative live projects for global brands, several concert films, three seasons of massive visual experiences for London Stadium, and a steady stream of fashion films and music videos.

Then in 2024 I learned Python to focus on retooling for participation in the future. I have accounts with around 60 Gen-AI platforms, I’m leading an HCI research project called Guava, and I’m lecturing young filmmakers on generative creativity.

Meanwhile I continue to direct and edit bits and pieces of culture and commerce, whilst enthusiastically developing and discovering and evangelising for the future of creative work.
